D3 Men VS Morris 09-22-18

A cool fall day greeted the Division 3 Mudturtles as they prepared to bounce back from a loss in Week 2 against Long Island RFC. Having had a bye week, the team felt well-rested and ready to play against the Morris D3 side. With several players playing in different positions than normal, the game was sure to be a true test of skill from the home side.

Morris struck first blood at the seven-minute mark, slotting a conversion to put them ahead 7-0. However, that would be the last try that the Lions would score in the first half. The Mudturtles attacked the Morris line relentlessly, with flyhalf Kevin Menyhart dotting the ball down in the 16th minute, with fullback Tim Stroever slotting the conversion to even the score. Eight minutes later, center Naeem Smith added another try, with a Stroever conversion, to increase the Mudturtles lead to 15-7. A pair of penalty kicks and a conceded penalty kick later, Union led at the half at 23-10.

Morris attempted to gain momentum as the second half began, scoring a penalty kick at the 45th minute to decrease the gap 23-13. Twelve minutes later, Smith broke off a fantastic run, scoring for the second time on the day. However, Morris answered almost immediately, and with the conversion missed, the score was 28-18 in favor of Union. Unfortunately for Morris, those would be the last points that they would score in the match.

Once again showing great open-field play, Smith added a third try to the score line, and with a conversion completed by Stroever, Union led the match 35-18. Morris continued to attack the Union line, hoping to find a break in their defense; however, they could not find it. Ten minutes later, Menyhart broke through several tackles to give Union a fifth try. With Stroever’s successful conversion, the Mudturtles finished the match at a margin of 42-18 in favor of the home side.

The man of the match for Union D3 was Conor Chopey, who, despite being a back playing flanker for the entire match, excelled in both his kickoff returns and his strong tackling. The D3 side travels to Long Island next week for a rematch against Suffolk.
